For the Rajasthan State Congress Committee, the celebration that began in December last year with the comeback of Congress, seems to continue with the party sweeping the mayoral elections in the state. Congress grabbed the Jaipur, Kota, Bikaner mayoral posts from the BJP while reclaimed the post in Jodhpur. The debacle of the BJP clearly defines its loosing urban base. The prestigious Jaipur Mayor seat went to Jyoti Khandelwal, who defeated her BJP rival Suman Sharma by a margin of 13,495 votes. Ratna Jain of the Congress was elected Mayor in the Kota Municipal Corporation (KMC) while Bikaner Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) mayor seat was bagged by Bhawani Shankar Sharma. In Jodhpur, Gehlot-backed Rameshwar Dadeech clinched the mayor post beating his BJP rival Prasan Chand by a margin of 34,772 votes. The election were also held for 11 municipal councils and 31 municipalities. Out of the 46 chairmanship post, Congress topped the list with 29 seats followed by BJP (10), independents (6) and BSP (1) seat. The results are a shocker to BJP which had dominated the last municipal elections winning 31 of the total 46 civic bodies. The performance of the Gehlot government was attributed to the victory registered by Congress. Meanwhile, the infights within BJP was held responsible for their debacle. BJP's star campaigner Vasundhara Raje kept aloof from the election campaign. Reacting to the overwhelming victory in the local bodies elections, chief minister Ashok Gehlot said that the people have given their mandate on the good governance and people-friendly policies
